Saturday Matinee: Captain America Movie Serial Parts 12 and 13

Hello you, and hello August! I realized I let the entire month of July go by without posting any of the chapters of the current Saturday Matinee, Captain America. How gauche of me! That's pretty bad, July kind of being Cap's month and all. Time to make it up by posting the next two chapters of the 1940s serial here. I hope you enjoy!

If you haven't enjoyed this feature, please let me know that as well. I'd love to hear your feedback. I can't improve the blog if I don't know what you'd like to see, so don't be shy. You can answer my survey along the right of the blog, you can leave a comment, or email me at phillyradiogeek@gmail.com. Any way you'd like, let me know what you think.

Have a great weekend! Go and see Guardians of the Galaxy! And check out the sweet promotional art for Avengers: Age of Ultron above.

Saturday Matinee: Captain America Movie Serial, Part 6

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable time during the unofficial start of summer. For me, it doesn't feel like summer until the official start of summer, but that's a story for another time. Above all else, please take the time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country this weekend.

Here is this week's Saturday Matinee, chapter 6 of Republic Pictures 1944 serial, Captain America! Enjoy!

Saturday Matinee: Captain America Movie Serial, Part 4

Hello everyone! It's a bit early, being Friday morning as I write this, but here is this weekend's installment of Captain America, the 1944 movie serial from Republic Pictures!

But first, some kinda sorta related news. The TV series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ties in closely with the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has been renewed for a second season. Yay! Also, a second Marvel live action series, Marvel's Agent Carter, has been picked up to series. The show revolves around agent Peggy Carter, an ally of Cap's from World War II who was a prominent character in the first Captain America film. Actress Hayley Atwell reprises her film role as Carter for the series. I'm really looking forward to both these shows!

And now, back to the serial. Enjoy!

And as always, don't forget to grab some refreshments at the snack bar!

Saturday Matinee: Captain America Movie Serial, Part 1

Hello one and all! I hope everyone who celebrates has a Happy and Blessed Easter weekend. I'm taking the opportunity to "resurrect" (see what I did there?) an old feature of the blog. Please welcome the return of the Saturday Matinee!

For those who don't remember, I used to feature a classic movie serial chapter every weekend. Previous subjects have included Batman and The Crimson Ghost. This time, I'm hopping on the red, white, and blue bandwagon of the new movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier by featuring the Captain America serial produced by Republic Pictures in 1944!

Unfortunately, this version of the character bears little resemblance to the Cap we know and love. This Cap is not scrawny patriot turned super soldier Steve Rogers, but ordinary powered district attorney Grant Gardner (Dick Purcell), tracking down the not-so super villain the Scarab, a museum curator who is on the hunt for two dangerous items, "The Electronic Firebolt" and the, ahem, "Dynamic Vibrator" *snicker*. This Cap has also traded in his iconic shield for--a gun. How un-Cap like! Finally, the war doesn't feature in the plot at all; this is simply a straight-ahead crime caper with the hero and villain just happening to wear funny outfits.

Here is part 1 of Republic Pictures' Captain America. Enjoy!

Don't forget to grab some snacks at the snack bar!

Saturday Matinee Halloween Special: Vintage Horror Movie Trailers

This is a revival of sorts of a feature I used to have on the blog called the Saturday Matinee. Each week, I would feature a chapter of an old movie serial along with a clip or two of old movie trailers, advertisements, and snack bar commercials to create the feeling of being at an old matinee.

I don't have a creepy serial, but I do have some fun horror-related trailers which look like they sat in a vault since they were first used--which makes them look perfectly not perfect! This reel also features movie theater buffers and snack bar plugs. Grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show!

I hope you've enjoyed this installment of the Saturday Matinee. It wasn't the smoothest this time around, as I often neglected to get each chapter posted on my self-imposed schedule of Friday afternoons. I think I'll give the Matinee another breather for awhile, and when it returns, I'll just post each chapter whenever I can (but always once a week).

If you really like this feature, let me know at phillyradiogeek@gmail.com. If you hate this feature, let me know that as well. I'm always looking for ways to improve the site.

Thanks!

Saturday Matinee: Crimson Ghost, Part 8

The Saturday Matinee--late again! Once again, I'm very sorry for those of you loyally following this feature. I think considering my wacky posting schedule lately, I should put this feature in cold storage after the Crimson Ghost is completed until I get back on track. Please let me know if you like the Matinee. Thanks!

Saturday Matinee: Crimson Ghost, Parts 5 and 6

Wow, what a terrible blogger I've been this month! Things have been very crazy the last few weeks, and may remain so going forward, so posting may continue to be sporadic for awhile. Please bear with me and I'll be sure to get some cool thigns going soon.

Up right now, parts 5 and 6 of the Crimson Ghost, since I missed last week. Thanks!

Saturday Matinee: Crimson Ghost, Part 1

Welcome to the latest subject of the returning Saturday Matinee. Yeah, I know it's Friday, but it's easier for me to get this posted now so that it's in place for the entire weekend.

The latest feature is The Crimson Ghost. I saw this back in the late 1980s on a local UHF station (colorized, no less) and found it quite intriguing. Others may find it intriguing for two reasons. One, the face of the Crimson Ghost was used as the logo for the punk rock band the Misfits, and two, the Ghost's right hand man is played by Clayton Moore, who went on to greater fame portraying the Lone Ranger in various films.

It's not often you see an action film where the villian is the star.

Enjoy!

Saturday Matinee: Drive-In Theater Intermission Films

As I've said before, I'll only have a few light items for the Saturday Matinee this month, as the feature will be on hiatus through the holiday season. It'll be back in full force after the new year.

This week I have a 10-minute montage of various interstititial films that would air before, between, and after features, sometimes advertising the concession stand fare, sometimes asking you to behave at the theater, and some are public service announcements that were commonly featured at theaters back in the day. Most of these were designed for drive-in theaters, which never featured a matinee of anything, being only able to show movies at night, but what the hey. Enjoy!
