Walt Disney Studios, "Ben and Me"

Happy 4th of July! Well, it's only July 2nd, but who's counting? Plus, if I wait until the 4th, it's highly doubtful anyone will see this.

Ben and Me is a Walt-Disney-produced short, animated film telling how a fictional mouse--and not the one you'd expect--assisted Benjamin Franklin in several of his many high-profile endeavors. I first saw this in a movie theater on an elementary school field trip and enjoyed it. I found it on YouTube last year and saved it for 4th of July this year.

Please enjoy embedded below or directly on YouTube here.

Have a great holiday weekend!

List O' Links for Friday, September 1, 2017

Hello all! I hope you haven't forgotten me. If not, thanks for checking in, even when I'm absent for awhile. I still love this blog and those who read it!

As we say goodbye to the commercial summer season, let us relax with these links!

I love the Cartoon Network series Teen Titans GO!, and I also love the '80s. The two combine perfectly in the characters' love for a real life song, "The Night Begins to Shine." Read how the show made this stock music library track a cult hit!

Comic books based on hit TV series are not uncommon in comics history, but it's not just hit series that have been adapted that way. Here are 13 comic books based on TV series you may not have know existed!

Did you know Mickey Mouse once suffered from extreme depression? Yep, it happened!

With the summer season about to wind down, this may not do you much good now, but next time you go back into the water, here are steps to help you survive a shark attack!

Beloved actor Bruce Campbell has a new book out, and season 3 of Ash vs Evil Dead has wrapped production, but you can also check out a rare homemade horror film of his from way back in 1974 called Curse of the Werewolf thanks to the horror news Web site Bloody Disgusting!

Finally, learn a little more about Labor Day and celebrate the way the holiday's founders intended--by doing nothing!

Have a great Labor Day weekend! Enjoy the fruits of your hard work! I hope you had a great summer! And stay tuned right here, as the blog will be back in business the rest of the year!

List O' Links for Friday, May 6, 2016

Hi everyone! I don't have much time, or links, today, so I'll make this short and sweet.

As you can see from the graphic above, this Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! I may not be able to make it this year because reasons, but you be sure to head on out to your local comic shop and pick up this year's crop of great free comics! And be sure to buy something while you're there and keep your comic shop afloat! Find the shop nearest you here!

According to the Washington Post, millenials are not eating cereal because they're too lazy to wash the dishes afterwards. If this is true, we will be easy pickins' for our forthcoming alien overlords.

A man named Billy Mitchell claims to be the "Neil Armstrong of Pac-Man" because he was the first person to win a perfect score. He also famously won a perfect score in Donkey Kong. To say the man is proud of his accomplishments is quite the understatement!

In 1978, Ringo Starr had his own TV variety special. It is, according to Ultimate Classic Rock, everything you'd expect from a late '70s TV variety special starring Ringo Starr. Check it out, if you have the stomach for it!

Finally, if you're a fan of horror movies, particularly Japanese horror, this is your lucky year. A movie is arriving this year that pits the girl from The Ring against the mom from The Grudge. It's like King King vs Godzilla or Freddy vs Jason, but with dead Japanese ladies!

Have a great weekend! Go get some free comics! And don't forget Mom this year! Happy Mother's Day! Exclamation points!

America in Song

For obvious reasons, I've decided to go the patriotic route this week. To start, here are some great songs to put you in the spirit of the holiday. Enjoy!

Countdown to...Columbus Day?

Here I am, a few hours early, posting this Sunday night instead of Monday morning, outside of my pattern of early weekday morning blogging lately, so I can get this to you before a day off tomorrow. Tomorrow is, or course, Columbus Day, and although we are indeed counting down to Halloween all month long, I thought it still appropriate to acknowledge the day, after which, we ramp up the Halloween goodness.

Here is a fun Bugs Bunny cartoon in which he assists the sailor in discovering America. Enjoy "Hare We Go!"

Here is another Columbus cartoon that I'd never seen until researching for this post. Here is an educational approach to the Columbus story. Very interesting!

We'll be back with more Halloween goodness Tuesday. See you then!

What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! I hope everyone is having fun during this unofficial start of summer. As everyone has fun and enjoys themselves, please remember the reason for this day.

As a reminder, I highly recommend watching this delightful special (although I say that about many Peanuts specials). In this one, a sequel of sorts to the 1980 feature film Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown, the Peanuts gang leave Europe for home (long story--see the movie) when they find themselves at not one but two significant places in military history--Flanders Field of World War I, and Omaha Beach of World War II. It's a poignant, sobering special that conveys the sacrifice of the brave souls of both of these hallowed grounds in a way viewers of all ages can understand and appreciate. If you can, please take a half hour of your time for this wonderful and rarely seen program.

Thanks! Be safe!

Fat Albert Easter Special

I've noticed two things as I've examined my blog reader stats for the last few days: my Easter posts from last year are beginning to get more hits again (not surprising, as Easter is next Sunday), and I've been StumbledUpon! This blog has been added to StumbleUpon's cartoon page, and I'm thrilled about it! To anyone encountering my blog for the first time due to this service, welcome! I hope you stay on board.

In honor of both of these trends, I present today something that I hope will satisfy both the Easter and StumbleUpon crowd. Today I present the Fat Albert Easter Special, courtesy of Hulu. It originally aired on CBS on April 3rd, 1982. Hey Hey Hey!

Happy New Year, Charlie Brown

Hi, remember me? Sorry it's been so long since I last posted. I planned on taking a few days off, but not quite this long. Let's get to it!

I'm sending off 2008 with the TV special Happy New Year, Charlie Brown. The Peanuts gang is assigned to read War and Peace during Christmas vacation, and Charlie Brown is having quite a hard time. I can't blame him; what kind of teacher assigns a bunch of 2nd graders War and Peace?

Enjoy, and Happy New Year! My blessings for you in the new year ahead.

Pac-Man, "Happy Pacs-Giving"

Next up in my Thanksgiving parade of clips in another episode of the Pac-Man Saturday morning animated series from the early 80s. Travel back in time to see the first Thanksgiving in Pac-Land in "Happy Pacs-Giving!"

Tex Avery, "Jerky Turkey"

The next serving in this year's Thanksgiving feast is the MGM cartoon "Jerky Turkey," directed by animation legend Tex Avery. It's the typical Pilgrim versus turkey routine, which is a common theme found in cartoons. Most of my Thanksgiving posts this year will demomstrate this. This one features plenty of self-aware corny jokes, a few of which are World War II related, as this is when this cartoon was made. This was featured on the Pop Culture Holiday Blog last year.

Enjoy!

Thanksgiving TV Commercials

Today begins this year's Thanksgiving programming. Turkey Day is just two weeks away, and those weeks will fly by, trust me. Before we begin this year, I want to tell you to check out last year's stuff by using the Thanksgiving label on the right of the blog. I updated those posts yesterday, as there were quite a few dead links, but now they're ready to go. If you ever check out my archives and notice a dead link or missing video, please let me know in the comments and I will correct it as soon as I can. And now, onward to Thanksgiving 2008!

Today I just have a few TV commercials, but they're good ones. This first one is a Carvel ice cream cake spot for Tom the Turkey. If you're familiar with Carvel cakes at all, you know it simply means a picture of a turkey made of icing on one of the same two molds Carvel used for all of their cakes. But I have to admit, their cakes are delicious!

If youv'e ever made Thanksgiving dinner, you know what a pain in the arse it is to thaw a turkey. This commercial for Jennie-O turkeys demonstrates how not to thaw it!

Finally, here is a commercial that wasn't exactly created for Thanksgiving. In fact, it debuted during this year's Super Bowl back in January. Two balloons in the Macy's Thansgiving Day Parade, Underdog and Stewie from Family Guy, battle it out in the New York City sky over a Coke bottle balloon. Who wins out? You may be surprised!

I'll have more Thanksgiving fun in a day or two. See you then!

Bugs Bunny Halloween Double Feature

Next up in my Halloween hit parade is a pair of Bugs Bunny cartoons both from the early 50s, I believe. First up, Bugs versus Witch Hazel in "Broom-stick Bunny."

Next, Bugs is in double trouble when he meets Dr. Jeckyl and his fiendish alter ego in "Hyde and Hare."

Thanks!

Halloween TV commercials

Hello again. I'm kicking off the Halloween programming (not counting yesterday's intro) with some Halloween-related TV commercials of the past. Let's get right to it.

Hallmark wants you to get in the Halloween spirit:

I loves me some Pillsbury Halloween cookies (I had some Tollhouse Halloween cookies just earlier this evening-yummy!):

Need a one-stop shop for all your Halloween needs? Go to your local Woolworth or Woolco!

More tasty Halloween treats, courtesy of Dunkin' Donuts!

This commercial shows that even Frankenstein is henpecked at home. I hear ya, brother!

Frank showing his stuff for Doritos once again:

It's been a long time since I've featured a McDonald's commercial--too long!

So many of these commercials involve food. Here is one of my favorite of these commericals, for Carvel ice cream cakes. Seeing one of these commercials was as tasty a treat as eating the cakes themselves!

Here is the last one for today, and it's not really Halloween-related, but it is frightening until the last few seconds. This commercial aired only one night during the 2004 Summer Olympics. It features a typical horror movie-style scene of a young woman running for her life from a crazed, masked killer. The twist, however, is that the woman runs to safety, with her killer reluctantly giving up--thanks to her Nike running shoes. Nike came under fire from women's groups who claimed the commercial was misogynistic and in poor taste. Whether that's true or not, it definitely is a very unusual way to sell sneakers. Take a look!

Who knew there were so many Halloween commercials? If you know of any more, let me know and I'll post them here. Thanks!

This is Halloween!

Hello boys and ghouls (HA! I'm so funny). Welcome to the beginning of Halloween here at Me and You and a Blog Named BOOOOO! I've been waiting a long time to kick off all of the great stuff I've been saving, and I'm going to keep it coming the rest of the month through. I'll still feature the Saturday Matinee with Batman, but everything else in October will be of a Halloween flavor. Stay tuned, and log in as a Follower of the blog (check out the feature on the right).

Without further ado, I hereby officially begin Halloween at Me and You!

A Post About Stuff Going On...It's Just Talk, No Big Whup

Hi everyone. I don't have any video or images today, I'm just going through some general blog business, so here goes.

--Happy Birthday to me! Yep, today's my birthday, 34 years and counting, and I'm having a great day thanks to my family, who of course are the best gift of all!

--I'd like to thank all of my regular readers out there who are kind enough to link me on their own sites. Thanks to Todd Mason of the Sweet Freedom blog, Karswell at The Horrors of It All, Rich Dart of Dartman's World of Wonder, Dave at the Mostly Ghostly and Children's Records blogs, Rokk Krinn at the Comic Book Revolution, Lady Tink at Up Close and Personal, the King of Jingaling at Fa La La La La, and to anyone else who I may have missed. I appreciate the traffic that comes my way thanks to you guys!

--Speaking of blogs that link to mine, The Pop Culture Holiday Blog is back! Not that it ever went away, but it hasn't had a new post since St. Patrick's Day. It's back as of September 22nd, and it's already started featuring Halloween posts. Do yourself a favor and check it out in my blog list. And speaking of Halloween...

--I begin my Halloween programming next Sunday! Starting October 5th, this blog will be wall to wall Halloween, except for the Saturday Matinee, which will wrap up the Batman serial (Batman's kinda Halloween-like anyway, so it fits). I've been gathering clips since August, and I can't wait to share them all with you. I hope to increase the number of posts here in order to showcase all the fun, so please stay tuned throughout the month for awesome Halloween goodness!

In fact, this blog is going to be feature almost nothing but holiday fare for the rest of the year. I may take a break for more general post topics the first week or two of November, then get back into the holiday swing of things with Thanksgiving and then, of course, Christmas. It's going to be great!

Thanks again to everyone who enjoys this blog. Please, please, contact me at phillyradiogeek@gmail.com or leave a comment on any post. See you later!

Labor Day 2008

Yes, I'm afraid that this weekend is the last hurrah for Summer 2008. Although Mother Nature says there are still three more weeks of summer, society says to knock off the fun stuff and get back to work or school. Some schools (certainly colleges) have already started for the fall. To send off each summer in grand fashion, we say goodbye during the Labor Day weekend, a time originally meant to honor the American worker. I'd like to get back to the original spirit of the day right now. And what better way to do that than with---country music! Well, mostly.

First up: Alabama's salute to John Q. Public, "40-hour Week."

Next: Garth Brooks teams up with Huey Lewis on Huey's classic song "Workin' For A Livin'."

Of course, there's always the classic country music song that states the attitude of many an American worker: "Take This Job and Shove It!"

While not a country song, it is indeed true that everybody's "Workin' For the Weekend." Loverboy certainly is.

Although blue collar workers have quite a great deal of stuff to deal with at their jobs, let's not forget our white collar, cubicle-dwelling workers (myself included). Nowhere has their plight been as well-depicted as in the hilarious movie Office Space. Here are highlights.

Finally, one tradition of Labor Day is the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, an event I watch and support every year. Please tune in this year and give what you can; they're a great organization. Here is a sample of what they do:

Jerry closes every telethon with his singing of "You'll Never Walk Alone."

If you would like to give to MDA, you can donate online at their Web site and find out where you can view the telethon in your area.

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Memorial Day: In Flanders Fields

In honor of all Americans who gave their lives for our country, I present this moving collage of photos set to a musical version of the famous poem "In Flanders Fields." Although not written for American soldiers specifically, the feeling of the poem certainly applies. You can learn about this poem here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Flanders_Fields

April Fool!

Hello again, faithful readers--all four of you. I hope you enjoyed opening day of baseball better than I did (Nationals 11, Phillies 6--augh!).

Today, as you know, is April Fools' Day, a time when people like to play (bad) practical jokes. I wouldn't do that to you, but I do have practical jokes played by others for you to enjoy.

First up, and coinciding with the start of baseball, is a joke played on Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick by, well, every other member of the Phillies organization. Kendrick was told by the team manager that he was being traded to Japan. SPRING TRAINING FOOL!!

Next, two clips from the 80s TV show Bloopers and Practical Jokes, hosted by broadcasting stalwarts Dick Clark and Ed McMahon. Merv Griffin is their victim in this clip:

Alex Trebek is next:

Finally, poor Justin Timberlake sees his new home raided by supposed IRS agents, who in fact are part of Ashton Kutcher's MTV hit Punk'd.

Stay alert for jokers in your world today, and I'll see you again no later than Friday with...gee, I don't know yet. But I'm sure it will be fantastic!

Jesus of Nazareth, The Crucifixion

Happy Vernal Equinox everyone! I hope you all get a chance to get out into the new spring sunshine. I believe it's officially becoming spring as I type this. Hope your day is going well whatever your weather pattern.

Here is the last of this year's Easter posts, and it deals with the very origin of the celebration itself; no bunnies or colored eggs here. This is a dramatization of Jesus's crucifixion from Franco Zeffirelli's hours-long television miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (imagine if there were real footage). If you celebrate the spiritual aspect of the holiday seriously, you should enjoy it.

I hope everyone has a Happy Easter, regardless of religion (or lack thereof). I'll see you again on that day, and for the third time within the last two months, it will be a post of personal significance for me. See you then!
