Jaws 50: The Shark Is Still Working Documentary

Happy Birthday Jaws! It was 50 years ago this very day that Bruce the shark first terrorized audiences, scaring them away from the water to this very day. It's my favorite movie, despite, or because, it frightened me to my core after seeing it from a too-young age. And I'm far from the only one with such an experience.

The Shark Is Still Working is a fan-made documentary that lovingly details the effect the film had on moviegoers worldwide. If you count yourself as a Jaws fan, you will see yourself in the documentary.

Enjoy it below or directly on YouTube here. Farewell and adieu!

The Saw 20th Anniversary Jewelry Collection by Gnoce

Welcome back! I hope you’re enjoying your Halloween season!

Today at the blog, we’re doing something a bit different than we normally do.

I was recently contacted by Gnoce, the jewelry company that offers beautiful, timeless jewelry that is festive, fun, and affordable. They offer jewelry for a variety of occasions and holidays; Halloween is no exception. Thanks to Gnoce for providing me with these complementary pieces. I can’t wait to show them to you!

Billy the Puppet has been placing his victims in the most precarious of situations for two decades, and you can now literally wear your adoration for the rascal on your sleeve. Case in point, this awesome bracelet, letting you know that, for his latest victim, it’s truly “Game Over.”

A great thing about the bracelet is that you can add charms to it, such as this one featuring Billy on a tricycle (see above on the bracelet and below by itself). You know, when he’s on his downtime.

Moving from the wrist to the finger—Saw is all about body parts, after all—Gnoce also offers this Saw ring, featuring the face of our favorite little maniac. Choose your size and he can be yours!

Finally, we have this beautiful necklace, complete with Billy’s face and a favorite weapon of choice. Add this to the other pieces shown above, and you will be the number one Saw fan in your ‘hood!

To show off these pieces “in the field,” my daughter Megan has graciously agreed to model these pieces to show how great they look (thanks Megan!). Complete your spooky, goth look with the Gnoce Saw collection today!

Dramatic much?

Welcome, everyone, to the 2024 Countdown to Halloween! I feel like we were just here 11 months ago! Surprising as it may be, it is indeed the Halloween season again, and it's time for all of the spooky shenanigans that come with it: movies, TV shows, music, commercials, comedy, horror, and all-around fun.

Thanks to Dex of AEIOU and Sometimes Why for organizing this year's Countdown. He's a one-man operation this year, so please give him several rounds of applause for holding down the haunted fort this year. Thank you very much, Dex!

Please also be sure to visit as many of the participating blogs as possible--this ain't just about me, you know. This wouldn't be nearly as much fun without the many and varied blogs and social media accounts adding their unique spin on the festivities. There's more than one correct way to celebrate the season, as all of the sites will show. Thank you, fellow participants!

Without further ado, let the 2024 Countdown to Halloween begin!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review!

Hello all! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer! The season is a great time to take things easy and relax in the warm sun. But the season is just about over, and it's time to look ahead. Of course, what better event lies ahead during the fall season than that most spookiest of holidays, Halloween!  And I can't think of a better way to begin the spooky season than with the release of the long-awaited movie sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!

The movie opens wide Friday, September 6th, but I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to attend a preview screening with my daughter this past Tuesday. It was quite the pleasant experience!

When we first walked into the theater, we were greeted by a "bartender" dispensing Beetlejuice-themed beverages, two cocktails and one mocktail. Although my daughter and I are both of drinking age, we chose the mocktail, "Precious Potion," or something like that. Basically, it was a Shirley Temple in the guise of an afterlife drink, but it was good!

We were also greeted by this fellow by the bar.

The lobby was adorned with this fun display where you could appear to be hanging out with Betelgeuse and friend in the afterlife. We felt right at home!

As we entered the screening room, we picked up a couple of pieces of fun swag: a poster for the movie, which is featured at the top of this article, and specially adorned sunglasses to show your Beetlejuice fandom while keeping away the UV rays!

And now, my spoiler-free review of the film itself!

The now-grown Lydia (Wynona Ryder) is a TV psychic/medium on a Ghosthunters type of series, which is produced by Lydia's vapid boyfriend (Justin Theroux). When Lydia and her stepmother Delia (Catherine O'Hara) learn of Lydia's father Charles' death, they go to tell Lydia's estranged daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). All the while, the "ghost with the most" still pines for Lydia and sends her visions of himself from beyond. From there, we encounter a vengeful figure from Betelgeuse's past, a young romance with a twist, a celebrity cameo, a hammy afterlife cop (gleefully played by Willem Dafoe), and all of the usual insanity you'd expect from a Beetlejuice sequel.

So, the bottom line of this review--I loved it! Michael Keaton hasn't missed a step since 1988 when the original film was released (he turns 73 years old on September 5th). Ryder is as "strange and unusual" as ever as Lydia, even if adulthood has polished off her rougher edges from her teen years. No matter, as Ortega more than makes up for it with her steely portrayal of Astrid. O'Hara's Delia is as "Delia" as ever. The supporting cast provide exactly what their roles require and make great contributions to the film.

The style of the Beetlejuice universe is completely consistent with the original movie, relying much more on practical sets and effects than CGI (which is used sparingly but effectively). But the film also has as much substance as style. The importance of family, seeking understanding, crossing the generational divide, and processing grief, are themes prominent in the story, adding depth to the silliness.

I was thoroughly thrilled with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and I think you will be too! It's the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season!

Now excuse me while I strut down the street in my Beetlejuice specs!

Batman (1989) Trivia, Courtesy of Warner Bros!

Sunday, June 23rd of this year marked the 35th anniversary of Batman 1989. In its honor, the official Warner Bros. YouTube account posted this trivia video with questions based on the movie. They're super easy, but fun nonetheless.

Back in 2019 (which seems like decades ago), I posted a few tribute articles for the movie's 30th anniversary. Here is the link so you can enjoy those again or for the first time.

Happy 35th anniversary, Batman 1989!

Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special Movie Adaptation (2002)

Today's entry in the Countdown to Christmas is a wacky one, but that's exactly why I'm including it!

The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special was a movie made by filmmaker Scott Leberecht and others with an educational grant from the American Film Institute and not intended for commercial release. It is, however, based on an actual comic book one-shot published by DC Comics in 1991 (see the cover to that comic above).

In the comic and movie, Lobo, an alien intergalactic hitman, is hired by the Easter Bunny to "whack" Santa Claus, so that the Easter Bunny gets more love and attention. If the money is right, Lobo is up for the job! The actor playing Lobo is Andrew Bryniarski, know for playing Leatherface in several Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot films in the 2000s.

Enjoy! Watch it embedded below or directly on YouTube here.

The Haunted House Starring Buster Keaton (1921)

It's Hump Day this week at the Countdown to Halloween, and you're probably already looking forward to the weekend. But we still have a few days ahead of us until then, and you may need a pick-me-up. I hope this feature will do the trick!

Today I present the short silent film The Haunted House, starring old school comedy great Buster Keaton. In it, Keaton plays a bank teller who is framed for robbery by thieves who are working with an unscrupulous bank manager. When the police are in pursuit of Keaton, he seeks shelter in an abandoned house which just so happens to be the real thieves hideout. The thieves have rigged the house to appear haunted to passersby to prevent from being found out. When Keaton arrives, he is treated to the gang's spooky sinisterness.

Silent films may not be for everyone, but please give this one a try. I laughed out loud several times at Keaton's inventiveness. This movie is a lot of fun!

Enjoy!

Midnight Offerings TV-Movie (1981)

I'm back to round out the first week of the Countdown to Halloween 2023. And as I try to do on Fridays during the Countdown, I'm featuring a long-form program for you to enjoy over the weekend. This week, it's the 1981 TV-movie Midnight Offerings!

According to IMDb, "Vivian has magic powers. She doesn't hesitate to save her boyfriend David from failing in school by murdering teachers. However, David has gotten tired of her and is putting his charm on a new girl in school, Robin. Robin discovers that she also has magic powers, and it comes to a mental showdown between the two women over David."

It kind of sounds like Mean Girls but with witchcraft.

Oh, and supporting cast members include Marion Ross (Happy Days), Gordon Jump (WKRP In Cincinatti), and a very young Vanna White!

To be honest, I haven't seen this yet myself, but I'm fascinated by made-for-TV horror films, particularly since broadcast standards in the hayday of TV-movies were pretty stringent compared to today, and horror can be a challenging genre to make work with strict content guidelines. I'm always curious to see how the creators tell their horror stories under those conditions. Let's find out how the creators of this movie tell theirs!

I want to thank Joe Mello, one of my oldest social media buddys and the author of fellow Countdown blog Hellowe'en Horror, for bringing this movie to my attention!

I've embedded the movie into the blog below, but if you prefer to watch the movie directly on YouTube. the link is here.

Enjoy! Have a great first full weekend of October! Do spooky stuff! Drink pumpkin beer! Hang up decorations! Read old Halloween articles of my blog!

My First Halloween Shopping Trip of the Season

Hello everyone! I hope you are getting back into the post-summer groove easily and smoothly.

October is less than two weeks away, and I'm sure you are already prepping for Halloween. I'm a late bloomer compared to most out there, as I don't start celebrating Halloween hardcore until October 1st. I'm a slacker, I know! But I did make a couple of shopping excursions for the big night, only one of which bore any fruit, but I'm happy with what I bought.

First up, a family-size box of Carmella Creeper (Walmart, $3). I still have plenty of Monster Cereal I didn't eat from last year, but I couldn't pass up the first new Monster Cereal character since Fruity Yummy Mummy in the 80s. I've heard mixed reviews on the cereal, but I enjoy caramel apple flavor, so I'm looking forward to trying this next month. Until then, I need to eat last year's cereal!

Next up, a 3-DVD collection of Beetlejuice, Gremlins, and Gremlins 2: The New Batch in a new glow-in-the-dark slipcase (Walmart, $9.96). Even though I already have Gremlins on a VHS tape my wife bought me 20 years ago, and I have Beetlejuice on a not-so-great dubbed VHS tape from the late 80s, I thought the DVD upgrade was worth it, especially since I don't have Gremlins 2 in any format. Plus, the entire collection was less than $10. The new slipcase was just a fun bonus!

Next, a pair of skeleton gloves (Dollar General, $2). My wife bought a skeleton costume from Target on clearance last year, and I thought these gloves would complement it. They're a bit snug, but they'll do.

Finally, the pièce de résistance: a very cheap, off-model Michael Myers mask (Dollar General, $8). It's made of vinyl, it's only a half mask, and the hair is also vinyl, but considering how many bad Michael Myers masks there are out there, if I'm going to buy one, I'd rather pay $8 than $20 or more for one.

In a separate outing, and without even looking for it, I found a bottle of Fanta's foray into the "mystery soda flavor" gimmick, What The Fanta? (Wawa, 2 20 oz bottles for $4). I got the zero sugar version, and the artificial sweetener seemed to throw off what the intended taste should be, so I have no guesses, just something fruity. I want to try the sugar version for a better taste test.

So, what do you think? Is this a decent Halloween haul for my first trip of the season? It's still early, so I plan on doing more scary shopping in the coming weeks. If I find more good stuff, I'll share it with you.
And remember, the Countdown to Halloween starts here at the blog on Sunday, October 1st!

Thanks!

The Man in the Santa Claus Suit (1979)

Here we are--two days to Christmas! And what a season it's been!

Today I feature my final offering before the big day--the 1979 TV-movie The Man in the Santa Claus Suit. In this film, three men--an uptight political operative (Bert Convy), a homeless man (John Byner), and a lonely schoolteacher (Gary Burghoff)--rent Santa Claus suits from an elderly tailor (Fred Astaire, in his final film), each desperate to fulfill a need by renting the suit. Each man goes through a personal journey by wearing the suit. And that tailer seems to show up in different guises throughout the film. Is there something--different about him? Watch and find out!

The movie debuted on NBC in 1979, and was a staple of syndicated Christmas programming through most of the '80s. I've never seen the whole thing, but it's always looked interesting, and I'm happy to present it to you now.

Well, that's the last article before Christmas! I have LOVED doing this Countdown to Christmas--and it's not over yet! I plan on sharing a couple of New Year's Day related items next week, so please stay tuned. And remember that the holiday season doesn't end on December 26th. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are also part of the holidays--celebrate them!

Enjoy the film, below and directly on YouTube here. And if I don't see you during the rest of the season, Happy Holidays! Happy Hanukkah! Merry Christmas!

The Munsters' Revenge (1981)

And we say adieu to Week 3 of the Countdown to Halloween with a long form program, as we do every Friday. This weekend, it's the 1981 TV-movie The Munsters' Revenge!

In this TV-movie, which first aired Feburary 27, 1981, actors Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, and Yvonne DeCarlo are reunited in their Munster roles, with Herman and Grandpa mistaken for thieves (the true thieves are robot replicas from a nearby museum). It's up to the Munsters to clear the family's ghoul, er, good name.

This is another item I haven't yet seen, but I still feel compelled to share, especially with the Munsters on everyone's mind thanks to the new Rob Zombie film. The Munsters' Revenge is the first of several reunions and reincarnations of the franchise. Let's see if it's a good one.

Enjoy! Have a great weekend! Be spooky! You can also watch the movie directly on YouTube at this link!

John Carpenter's Halloween: The TV Edit

Another Friday means another long-form program, and today is another special one.

Today is one of the biggest days this Halloween season, because today is the release of the long-awaited movie Halloween Ends, the final showdown between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). It opens in theaters today and appears on the streaming service Peacock.

In preparation and celebration of this event, here is where it all started--the original classic Halloween. But at the same time, not quite the original!

This is in fact the TV edit of the film made for broadcast on NBC on October 30, 1981, which was the movie's television debut. After editing the film for content (this was over-the-air TV after all), Halloween was running too short for a two-hour broadcast, even with commercials. So at the request of the network, brand new scenes were shot specifically for the TV version, filmed at the same time as Halloween II (which was opening in theaters the same weekend this version of the original aired). Reluctantly, John Carpenter and the other filmmakers agreed, and this edit of the movie was born.

Enjoy! Have a great weekend! Eat, drink, and be spooky! Beware the Bogie Man!

It's 100 Days Until Halloween! Time for a Halloween News Update!

Hello everyone! This is your yearly reminder that today is only 100 days until Halloween! Which also means it's only 69 days until the start of the Countdown to Halloween!

As slow as things may be at the blog the rest of the year, October here at Me and You is always bursting with Halloween goodness. And there's already so much amazing stuff to look forward to. Here are several awesome things coming our way this Halloween season!

First up, Twitter cereal news account Cerealously has determined that this year's Monster Cereals will be doing a promotion with art brand KAWS. I hadn't heard of KAWS until my son told me about them, but that isn't even the story. The real story: Fruit Brute is back! It hasn't been available since 2013, but it will make a grand appearance this Halloween season!

A multipack is reportedly already available at Sam's Club wholesale stores, but you can expect this year's Monster Cereals to start shipping everywhere this August.

In other Halloween cereal news, toy expert James Zahn has discovered a Halloween cereal out in the wild right now! It's this year's edition of Halloween Fruity Pebbles. July seems awfully early to make a Halloween cereal available in stores, but if you look for it at your local supermarket, good luck!

On the beverage front, the king of Halloween, Matt from the always excellent Dinosaur Dracula site, revealed back in April that Mountain Dew VooDew will once again grace our grocery shelves this Halloween season. The soda has been a fun addition to Halloween since 2019, but 2022 will have an even greater addition, and one I've been wanting from the very beginning--a zero-calorie version! Yes!

Here's a BIG announcement regarding Halloween music. Record label Craft Recordings is releasing the full soundtrack to the legendary TV special It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! The soundtrack was first released in 2018, but it was not well received by fans. That version of the soundtrack was comprised of pieces edited directly from the TV special along with sound effects and not the original master tapes, which had been considered lost to the ages.  But the masters have now been found, including alternate takes not used in the special!

Craft will offer the soundtrack in severals formats; digital and streaming, CD, a 45-rpm vinyl record, a 33 and 1/3-rpm orange vinyl record shaped like a pumpkin, and a picture disc vinyl album with a unique splatter design, but that one has already sold out in pre-order.

But that's not all. A "single" from the album has already been made available digitally, an alternate take of "The Great Pumpkin Waltz." Listen below!

The soundtrack will drop on all music retail outlets on Friday, August 26th. For more information, click here, pre-order here, and look below!

And the Halloween hits just keep on comin'! September will ramp up the Halloween festivities with two new films, but featuring familiar faces. Rob Zombie's long-awaited Munsters film will appear on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital on demand Tuesday, September 27th, with a Netflix debut later in the year (before Halloween I hope!).  Here is the latest trailer!

On Friday, September 30th, the witch is back! Witches plural, that is. Hocus Pocus 2 flies into Disney+ with more treacherous trickery than before!

Folks, all of the above takes place before October even starts. And we STILL have more Halloween greatness to cover!

October will see the release of The Spirit Halloween Movie, a movie inspired by the number one Halloween costume and novelty retailer. In the movie, several teenagers enter a Spirit Halloween store on Halloween night as a prank, but the joke is on them. There is a ghost in the store possessing all of the animatronic figures and attacking the teens! If the kids don't escape, they'll become possessed too!

The movie stars Christopher Lloyd and Rachel Leigh Cook. There is no trailer yet, nor is there word on if the movie will be available in theaters or home video/streaming, but this sounds really cool!

Everyone's favorite homicial doll, Chucky, returns to SyFy and USA Network on Wednesday, October 5th! My son and I had a lot of fun with this series last season, and we're looking forward to to see what the little man does next!

Finally, the big one: Halloween Ends

Yes, the final showdown between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers takes to theaters (and maybe Peacock) Friday, October 14th. I wasn't too thrilled with Halloween Kills last year, but if it's Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode in a movie together, I have to see it! It doesn't get more Halloween than that!

Simply judging from this list alone, this upcoming Halloween season looks to be fantastic! But I'm sure there will be plenty more fun surprises we don't see coming. Brace yourself, folks, it's gonna be one spooky hayride.

Thanks! The Countdown to Halloween begins Saturday, October 1st!

Batman Returns: Dark Side of the Knight Featurette

Here we are--my final post in tribute to the 30th anniversary of Batman Begins!

We'll start off with a short interview Tim Burton did on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno promoting the film. Note how awkward Burton seems to feel during the interview; you can tell it's not his thing!

And today's main feature, a short "making of" film titled "Shadows of the Bat: Dark Side of the Knight." I assume this is a special feature made for a home video release.

And...that's it!

Thank you very much for joining me in this three-week salute to a huge '90s era film! It's hard to believe it's been three decades since its release. I hope you enjoyed it. Please comment below or on any of my articles.

Thanks! Have a great weekend!

Batman Returns Coverage by the British Press

Welcome back! We're in the home stretch of our Batman Returns 30th Anniversary Celebration! Just a couple more posts before we put the bat to bed!

Here we have coverage of the film's opening by a British media outlet. It features the film's premiere with many celebrities in attendance, a look at various merchandise associated with the movie, and lastly a feature on a live action Batman stunt show. It's a fun look at both the movie's release and the state of movie hype 30 years ago.

Enjoy!

P.S. Earlier today, I finally gave the movie a 30th anniversary screening. While I still have some issues, I enjoyed the rewatch more than I expected. It was fun!

Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Face to Face," Batman Returns Soundtrack

My Batman Returns 30th Anniversary salute rolls on with a look at--and more importantly, listen to-- the song from the film's soundtrack, "Face to Face" by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

"Face to Face" has the distinction of being the only non-orchestral music featured in the movie; the rest of the soundtrack consisted solely of Danny Elfman's score. This is quite a departure from the first film in the series, which featured two soundtrack albums--the score by Elfman and a full song soundtrack by Prince. The two subsequent sequels, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, both featured soundtracks with several tunes from different artists.

Yet Returns has merely this one song from Siouxsie and the Banshees. The song's gothic, slightly eerie sound fits perfectly with the film; in fact, it would fit well with ANY Tim Burton-directed film!

Enjoy! And please note that, despite my original plan to close my celebration of the movie this week, I will be extending it into next week as well! Batman Returns fans rejoice!

Finally, this Sunday, June 19th is the EXACT date of the 30th anniversary! Be sure to watch it in honor of the occasion at some point this weekend, whether on HBO Max or the home video format of your choice.

OK, now here's the song. Have a great weekend! Happy Father's Day!

Batman Returns Actor and Director Interviews

Here we are at the end of the first week of my celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of Batman Returns!

I close out the week with interviews of Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danny DeVito promoting the film. Hear their insight into their motivations and inspirations for their contributions.

I'll have more fun Batman Returns items for you next week. Have a great weekend!

"Gotta fly!"

Batman Returns Product Tie-Ins

Welcome to the second post in my current tribute to Batman Returns on its 30th anniversary!

Today I have some fun TV commercials for product tie-ins to the movie. Some of these are toy commercials, which are the most obvious tie-ins, but others are for McDonalds Happy Meal toys (which proved quite controversial) and other products, including the home video release of the film. You can always judge a movie's impact on pop culture by the number of products it's used to shill.

Enjoy!

Happy 30th Anniversary Batman Returns!

"You don't really think you'll win, do you?"

You ALWAYS win at my blog! *ahem*

Welcome one and all to an event I'm excited to present to you. Starting today, and for the next two weeks, I will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of Batman Returns! The movie seems to be a favorite among my social media friends, so I think it's appropriate to spend extra time on the film.

The pop culture success of the first Batman film in 1989 can't be understated, but fans had to wait three long years for this hotly anticipated sequel. As big as the first movie was, the filmmakers went even bigger with this one, with new production design and not one but three villains in Catwoman and The Penquin, as well as murderous millionaire Max Shreck, an original character created for the film.

Batman Returns was darker (literally and figuratively), more explosive, and had, well--thousands of penguins with rockets attached to them. 'Nuff said.

My relationship with the movie is a bit complicated--there are things I like about it and things I wish had been done differently--but I can't deny it had a strong impact on my superhero-movie-loving self. I had just graduated high school two weeks before the release of the movie, and my friends saw it together as a sort of post-graduation celebration, and I have fond memories of seeing it with them. I'd love to hear your memories of this film in the comments.

Expect fun stuff the next two Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, leading up to the exact anniversary date of Sunday, June 19th (which this year is Fathers Day, coincidentally enough).

Below are the two trailers Warner Bros. made for the movie. Enjoy!

And remember--mistletoe is deadly if you eat it; a kiss is even deadlier if you mean it.
