Walt Disney Studios, "Ben and Me"

Happy 4th of July! Well, it's only July 2nd, but who's counting? Plus, if I wait until the 4th, it's highly doubtful anyone will see this.

Ben and Me is a Walt-Disney-produced short, animated film telling how a fictional mouse--and not the one you'd expect--assisted Benjamin Franklin in several of his many high-profile endeavors. I first saw this in a movie theater on an elementary school field trip and enjoyed it. I found it on YouTube last year and saved it for 4th of July this year.

Please enjoy embedded below or directly on YouTube here.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Disney's Haunted Halloween, 1983 Educational Film

During this time of year, media are always recounting the same Halloween safety tips year after year. Trick-or-treat with friends, wear reflective costumes so cars can see you, etc. Kids have been beaten over the head with these tips for a hundred years. But here are the same tips presented with fun.

Today I feature Halloween safety tips as told with classic spooky Disney animation. Disney's educational film division made this back in 1983, likely for distribution in schools, libraries, and other kid-friendly venues. The film features clips from such Disney classics as The Headless Horseman, "Trick or Treat" featuring Donald Duck and his nephews, Disney's Haunted Mansion, and other great spooky Disney fare.

A shout-out is necessary to my Twitter friend The Haunted Drive-In, purveyor of great Halloween and other coolness, for uploading this film to YouTube. Check out his channel here for more awesome videos.

Enjoy!

Stocking Stuffers

Ho ho ho no! Christmas Day is just mere days away! I'm as busy as everyone else is during this home stretch to the holidays, so I'll keep this short. Consider these various short clips as "stocking stuffers" to enjoy until the big day arrives!

Here is a lovely rendition of "Frosty The Snowman" by the late great Leon Redbone and Dr. John!

It's The Brave and The Bold starring Batman & Robin and...Santa Claus!

One commercial I remember seeing frequently on TV when I was a kid was this commercial for Disneyland Records's collection of Christmas songs recording specifically for release by Disney. This instantly brings me back to my childhood Christmases!

A couple of weeks ago we lost actor Eddie Mekka, who played Carmine Ragusa, "The Big Ragu," on Laverne & Shirley. Here he is from a famous Christmas episode of the series singing and dancing to "Jingle Bell Rock!"

Finally, here is a wonderfully fun recording of "The Merry Old Philosopher," by comedian Eddie Lawrence. The Old Philosopher was a long-running act of Lawrence's that spawned many novelty records; this one may be my favorite!

This will likely be my last post before Christmas Day, but I hope to have my Christmas greeting on the day itself, followed by a couple articles during my annual Christmas vacation next week.

If you don't get a chance to stop by before Saturday, I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

The Magic of Christmas at Disneyland (1992)

The Countdown to Christmas begins in earnest with the family friendly special The Magic of Christmas at Disneyland!

This was a special released by Disney in 1992 that was available on VHS and sold exclusively at Disney parks, not in stores. Thanks to the magic of the 'Net, it's here for all Disney fans to enjoy.

So, enjoy!

Marvel Cinematic Universe Slate for 2021 and Beyond!

If you're like me--and why wouldn't you be like me?--you are absolutely in love with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Almost everything they've produced has been a creative winner, and I get excited for every announcement they make for future projects.

So imagine my excitement as I watched this 20+ minute presentation of the MCU's products releasing in 2021, 2022, and beyond. There is a metric ton of material coming out the next two to three years in both theaters and Disney+, and the fact that all of it interconnects makes it all the more thrilling. Pick up your jaw after watching this presentation given at the virtual Disney investors' meeting this past December.

Enjoy! Excelsior!

Walt Disney Company, "DTV: Monster Hits" (1987)

To kick off the Countdown in full swing, today I offer the 1987 TV special "DTV: Monster Hits!"

In the 80s, Disney created a limited number of specials under the brand DTV, which showcased classic Disney animation set to popular hit songs (just like MTV, you see). This particular installment consists of scary/spooky-themed animation set to music from the Eurythmics, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and others. This special aired on NBC on October 30, 1987.

Enjoy!

Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land

Continuing our back to school transition, today we travel with Donald Duck to Mathmagic Land, where Donald learns the importance of math in our everyday lives and the world around us.

I love these side projects of Disney that, sadly, you never get to see anymore. Their feature-length movies are wonderful, but they did a great deal of short form projects that demonstrate as much artistry and care as the big features. I love coming across stuff like this.

Enjoy!

Walt Disney, Donald's Lucky Day (1939)

Today is Friday the 13th, but instead of posting something Jason Voorhees-related--with the exception of the image above--I'm going in a different direction.

Please enjoy the 1939 Disney Donald Duck cartoon "Donald's Lucky Day." Donald is a bicycle messenger unwittingly hired by thugs to deliver a bomb on Friday the 13th. Will Donald's luck run out?

No, it says so right in the title.

Have a great weekend!

Mickey's Safety Club, "Halloween Surprises"

The first week of the Countdown is already over. Yikes! Time to get right in to Week 2 before it also becomes history!

Today I offer an installment from Disney's educational video series Mickey's Safety Club, released in 1989 and 1990. In this installment, a little girl learns about Halloween safety from the Disney gang in "Halloween Surprises."

Gather the kids around for this one. Enjoy!

List O' Links for Friday, September 1, 2017

Hello all! I hope you haven't forgotten me. If not, thanks for checking in, even when I'm absent for awhile. I still love this blog and those who read it!

As we say goodbye to the commercial summer season, let us relax with these links!

I love the Cartoon Network series Teen Titans GO!, and I also love the '80s. The two combine perfectly in the characters' love for a real life song, "The Night Begins to Shine." Read how the show made this stock music library track a cult hit!

Comic books based on hit TV series are not uncommon in comics history, but it's not just hit series that have been adapted that way. Here are 13 comic books based on TV series you may not have know existed!

Did you know Mickey Mouse once suffered from extreme depression? Yep, it happened!

With the summer season about to wind down, this may not do you much good now, but next time you go back into the water, here are steps to help you survive a shark attack!

Beloved actor Bruce Campbell has a new book out, and season 3 of Ash vs Evil Dead has wrapped production, but you can also check out a rare homemade horror film of his from way back in 1974 called Curse of the Werewolf thanks to the horror news Web site Bloody Disgusting!

Finally, learn a little more about Labor Day and celebrate the way the holiday's founders intended--by doing nothing!

Have a great Labor Day weekend! Enjoy the fruits of your hard work! I hope you had a great summer! And stay tuned right here, as the blog will be back in business the rest of the year!

Tuesday's Overlooked TV-Movie: The Thanksgiving Promise

With Thanksgiving just a little more than a week away, I'm happy to present this week's Tuesday's Overlooked TV-Movie, the 1986 Disney production "The Thanksgiving Promise."

"Promise," which aired as an installment of the anthology series Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, stars the late Lloyd Bridges, as well as sons Beau and Jeff (in an uncredited minor role). In this story, a young boy is conflicted when he becomes emotionally attached to an injured Canadian goose that he has promised to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner.

And well--that's it! There's little information about the plot on the Internet, which I find strange as it has majors stars and was produced by Disney. For all the details, we'll just have to sit down and give the movie a--gander. GANDER! GOOSE! GET IT? HOW DO I DO IT? HOW DO I DO IT?

Coincidentally, next Wednesday, November 23rd is the 30th anniversary of the movie's original airing on ABC. I'm featuring it this week instead because, with the actual holiday next week, you might not have time to see it then. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Images

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! I'm just popping in for a quick minute before I join my family for the big day. Here are cool "appetizers" to whet your whistle for turkey with all the trimmings. Enjoy these Thanksgiving pics!

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

But wait, what's this?

Ho Ho Ho! Let the 2014 Holiday Season officially begin!

Tuesday's Overlooked: Donald Duck's First Appearance, "The Wise Little Hen"

Today is the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of Donald Duck, Disney's attitude-challenged fowl. He appeared as a supporting character in the Disney short cartoon "The Wise Little Hen" on this date in 1934, and he's been annoying his fellow Disney stars ever since. Here's an opportunity to not only get a glimpse of Donald in his first appearance, but to be reminded of the Disney studio in its infancy before it became the media behemoth it is today. Enjoy!

List O' Links Halloween Edition Part 2

Holy crap--Halloween is less than a week away! Plus, this is the last weekend before the big day (unless you plan on extending your Halloween celebration into next weekend after the big day, which many of you might). We really need to crank it up several notches. Let's do that with the help of some more awesome Halloween links!

If you haven't heard, some independent filmmakers created a fun but scary movie about two of the most non-scariest places in the world--Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Or are those places so innocent? Learn more about the indie film that's getting so much attention--Escape From Tomorrow!

When handing out treats next Thursday, don't be cruel. Do NOT hand out these Top 10 Worst Things to Give Trick-or-Treaters!

A large part of my Halloween horror film watching this season has been spent on the classic Universal Studios Frankenstein films. Here's a handy guide.

If you were a kid in the 1990s, chances are you enjoyed the Goosebumps series of young adults horror books by R. L. Stein. Here is a look at classic horror movies on the covers of fake Goosebumps books.

Surely you're familiar with the famous radio broadcast of War of the Worlds by Orson Welles and the panic it caused, but perhaps you've never actually heard it. Fear not--you can listen to it (and several other Welles broadcasts) right here!

Finally, here is a fun music EP from "geek musician" John Anealio with four songs all about Halloween or horror in some way. John has been doing his thing for some time now as both a musician and as a blogger and podcaster. You can download his EP for free or, if you can, pay what you can--you name your price.

Have a great spooky weekend! Be safe and have fun!

Mickey's Halloween Treat in the Street at Disneyland Paris

Welcome to week 4--4!--of the Countdown to Halloween. I am amazed that we are this far into it already. I feel like we just got started!

Anywho, I've got a fun family-oriented presentation for you today. Here is a full 23-minute production from Disneyland Paris back in 2011 called Mickey's Halloween Treat in the Street. Disney theme parks always have cool holiday-themed productions, so if you can't get to one this Halloween, here's the next best thing.

Enjoy!

List O' Links for Friday, January 25th, 2013

TGIF, as they say! Once again I have some fun stuff to peruse on the 'Net, so fire away when ready!

If you're in the mood to relax this Friday morning, enjoy the sounds of grocery store music from 1975!

If the NRA had their way, there would be no need for Batman. See for yourself!

One of my favorite comic book artists these days is Skottie Young. Check out his awesome take on Disney superhero Darkwing Duck!

If you're looking for a music act for your next social event, and you live in the 1980s, you may want to avoid these unique acts!

Finally, here's what Hulk fans such as myself have been looking for--a comprehensive list of all the causes of David Banner's Hulk-outs from the TV series.

Have a fantastic weekend!

The Making of Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion

I'm not into scary horror attractions at amusement parks. I'm much too squeamish for them. One attraction I have enjoyed, however, is The Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World. My family went there in April 2011, and my daughter wanted to go into the Mansion. I decided to go with her, as I figured, "It's Disney, how scary can it be?" And while it was cleverly creepy, it was by no means intimidating or horrific, but instead a lot of fun. I'm glad we went in--and came out alive!

Here is a short but interesting look at the early development of the attraction. It's obvious Disney and his Imagineers put a lot of care into their work.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the ride is the voiceover narration by one of the greatest voice actors of all time, the late Paul Frees. Here are some outtakes of his Haunted Mansion recording sessions.

Finally, a discussion of the Mansion wouldn't be complete without a round of the hauntingly awesome song that plays throughout the ride, "Grim Grinning Ghosts."

Thanks for visiting. Next time, be sure to bring your death certificate!

VHS Treasures at the Goodwill

Yesterday I had the chance to do something I rarely get to do--peruse the aisles of the local Goodwill thrift store. It's true that 99% of the things you'll find there are junk, donated by others mostly to get the tax write-off and to dispose of stuff they no longer have use for but don't have the heart to throw away, lest it be destroyed forever. It's the inanimate objects equivalent of "doggie heaven"--the stuff isn't dead, it's just gone away to roam the pasture freely.

I only had a few minutes to spare while I was there, so I didn't take stock of the entire store. I focused on the one area I thought would bare the most fruit--the VHS tape aisle. You see, despite this being the 21st century, with its lightning-speed Internet, streaming media, high-definition picture, and on-demand services, I still have no less than four--count 'em, four--VCRs in my home, two of which are parts of TV/VCR combos (remember them?). While I also have four DVD players and am addicted to YouTube, I still have a decent library of VHS tapes that I don't plan on parting with. In fact, as will be evidenced by this article, I have no trouble replenishing my stack of tape--as long as the price is right.

And indeed, the price was right in this instance. The store is having a sale--I still find that funny, a thrift store having a sale--on video tapes this week: two tapes for 99 cents. 99 cents! How can any video Luddite turn that down? I left the store with six videos in all, and here they are!

The first thing I noticed (besides the fact that they had a healthy dose of betamax tapes available, but that's another story), was The Magic Christian, starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. I've known of the film for nearly as long as I've known of the Beatles, which is a really long time, but I've never actually seen it. Now, for only half a buck, I can watch it whenever I want.

The next tape I picked up is another Sellers classic, Murder By Death, also starring Eileen Brennan, Peter Falk, David Niven, and Alec Guinness. I saw a short segment of the film in my early adolescence, but that's about it. This movie would later be ripped off somewhat by the 1980 TV-movie Murder Can Hurt You, which I've written about before.  One notable thing about the packaging of this tape is that the cardboard box (as opposed to a "clamshell" box) has a flap you can close on the side rather than a constantly open slot. Boxes with that flap weren't made for very long and aren't easy to find, although I do have a copy of Dr. Strangelove with the very same box and flap. It must have been common for video released by Columbia Pictures at one time--both Murder By Death and Dr. Strangelove are Columbia video releases.

Next is a tape containing two episodes of the Disney/Jim Henson coproduction Dinosaurs, featuring a nuclear family of dinos acting like your typical American sitcom family. This is sure to be a hit with my two little ones, and it was a favorite of my wife when it first aired circa 1990.

The next two tapes are full Disney productions: The Rescuers, the 1978 film starring the voice talents of Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor, which I don't recall ever seeing, even though I was the target audience when it was first released. The store also had the sequel The Rescuers Down Under, but I didn't want to potentially waste 50 cents on a sequel when the original is yet to be judged. Ever the cheapskate am I!

The other Disney film is the original Love Bug, which has always been a favorite of mine from the first time I saw it, and I can't wait to share it with my children. I was determined to drive a car just like Herbie one day, and I haven't yet given up on that dream!

Finally, the tape that is the most obscure of my new collection, and it's a Christmas special--The Gift of Winter. This is a Canadian animated special featuring the same characters from the bizarre yet awesome Halloween special Witch's Night Out, which is one of the first things I ever blogged about. In this one, Bazooey, Small, Tender, and other characters petition Old Man Winter to ease up a bit on the town, but later regret their decision. I have yet to actually see this special, but I'm happy to finally add it to my collection after all these many years.

If I have time, I'd like to go back to Goodwill and pick up some more tapes. Two for 99 cents people!

Tuesday's Forgotten Film: The Wizard of Speed and Time (1979)

This week's Tuesday's Forgotten Film is a short one, both in the film length and the length of this article.

The Wizard of Speed and Time was a short film (three minutes long) that was created in 1979 and aired on TV as a segment of The Wonderful World of Disney. Special effects technician Mike Jittlov stars as the titular Wizard who speeds through Southern California wowing bystanders (especially the ladies) until he slips on a banana peel, hurling him into the sky and smack dab into the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. Unharmed, he sallies forth with a song and dance routine: his singing, and dancing provided by movie cameras, lights, and other film equipment.

Jittlov later created a full length feature based on the concept, filming it in 1983 but not released until 1989, and even then only in limited release. Here I feature the original 3-minute short. Enjoy!
